Nuway are proud to have completed a full replacement of the Bowl Speaker system at the MKM Stadium, coupled with a new control system and upgrades to the existing concourse, exterior and ancillary areas.
The MKM stadium is home to Championship high-flyers Hull City as well as Super league Rugby side Hull Sharks.
The original audio system was installed during the building of the stadium in 2000 and was no longer fit for purpose due to unsupported products, sound quality issues and bowl speaker integrity. Operation of the system required a fully automated link to the fire system for day-to-day operations with manual operation on matchday provided by trained operators whilst the ground is under the safety control of the Police and Fire services.
Under direction of the new owners of the football club, a design was produced in Eas software to exceed the STI and level requirements of a 25,000 seat stadium by at least 15% as they were keen that the system was in line with their aspirations of a quick return to the Premier league and future capacity increases. The software mapping dictated an increase in the quantity and power of the speakers to provide the agreed requirement of 105db in all stands. A switch to low impedance amplifiers was also required for speech intelligibility throughout.
Nuway designed the system based around a series of industry leading QSC Digital Sound Processors sited in 5 plant rooms around the ground running over a redundant IP network using Dante Digital Audio based Codec linked by a fibre optic backbone.
To provide the powerful Bowl system, Powersoft 8K4 amplifiers were chosen coupled with Outline VEGAS 15CX speakers. Existing Cooper fire amplifiers were serviced and re-used in circulation areas and all 300 ancillary speakers were tested and replaced as necessary.
Control of the system is provided by a newly recorded set of pre-recorded messages triggered by a large Touchscreen display or multiple emergency paging microphones running on the incredibly versatile Q-SYS designer software which was programmed in-house.
The system has a series of ambient sensing microphones which monitor and control the sound levels to maintain headroom over the noise created by spectators.
For added safety and to conform to current British Standards, the system is linked by a monitored redundant network with fault monitoring delivered by the network in real time, together with redundant power supplies and battery back-up.
Nuway’s Stadium, Arena and Theatre experience provided an entertainment design featuring a new Yamaha Digital mixing desk with Dante digital audio facility together with Yamaha Dante Breakouts Stage Boxes and Sennheiser radio microphones and talk-back facilities.
Installation of the system took place over a wet winter 2022 with some testing days installing the Bowl speakers from Boom lifters at 30 metres above the stands!
Feedback from both the Management and supporters has been incredible. The even spread of the sound, vastly improved STI and power output has made matchday far more engaging with Rugby League half time fun and games reported as one of the highlights.
